As most anyone can tell you, explosions (unless planned) are not ideal. Hazardous locations are susceptible to sudden combustion due to their heightened levels of flammable gases/vapours/liquids, combustible dust, and ignitable fibres. What many don't know, however, are the vital explosion isolation and explosion prevention systems that can mitigate potential dangers for explosive hazards. Control Logic, experts on explosion prevention in QLD, want to take a moment to talk briefly about explosion isolation, and how it fits into an overall explosion prevention model.
Explosion isolation often refers to an explosion prevention system that inhibits pressure and/or flames from an explosion from propagating via the tubes or ducts in a facility. Some systems only hamper flames, but systems that do both are said to be complete isolation systems. It is also important to note that not all isolation will require both, and in some cases, only inhibiting flames is a sufficient measure.
Also of importance is the distinction between systems that require and those that do not require an additional method of detection and control in order to deploy at the appropriate moment. This detection can take several forms, including IR and visible radiation sensors, or pressure detection. The "active system" setup also requires trained personnel who can respond to changing conditions, which is why some opt for passive systems which are less likely to fail due to human error.
Regardless, upon detection of the explosion, an explosion isolation measure can then be deployed to control the situation. This might involve valves that shut and cut off the explosion from other areas, or it could include rapidly discharging chemicals that suppress flames and prevent them from spreading and causing damage. These measures must be designed to high standards that can withstand the pressures and heat of an explosion and as such the maximum level of forces that they might be exposed to should be worked out in advance.
